Overview of Indian Paper Industry
With an installed capacity of 6,410,000 tons per annum (TPA), and a production of 5,709,000 tons last year, India was the fifteenth largest paper producing country in the world. Per capita consumption of paper in India stands at a low 6 kg per annum, thus indicating the tremendous potential for growth.
There are about 525 paper mills in this industry sector, with individual capacities ranging from 10 to 600 tons per day (TPD). Bulk of these mills are of capacities smaller than 100 TPD, but about 50 mills have capacities above 100 TPD. Eucalyptus, tropical hardwood and bamboo are the main forest based raw materials used. Many mills use bagasse as the primary source of fibre, though lately, a number of projects have been planned based on imported recycled paper.
The demand for paper has shown a sustained growth rate of 6% in the last years. A study by Jaakko Pöyry places the demand for paper to grow to 7.912 million tons and 10.584 million tons by the year 2010 and 2015 respectively.
There are several major projects under planning and implementation in India also at the moment. The profit before taxes for major mills ranged from 15 – 24% last year and the share values of most of the companies have registered significant growth in the last few months. Indian paper industry is investing in technology and automation in a big way to enhance productivity and improve quality to be able to meet global competition, thus offering significant opportunities to machinery suppliers.
Agency Contract between Done Logistics Oy and Pepco Machinery Private Ltd.
Let us introduce to you Done Logistics’ agent in India Mr. Prabhat Bhattamishra and his company Pepco Machinery Private Ltd.. Mr. Bhattamishra is a mechanical engineer with over 3 decades association with the Indian paper industry. Prior to starting his own marketing and consulting company, PEPCO, he worked with the Indian licensees of VOITH, Germany, for about 19 years and then with the Neue Bruderhaus licensees. This was followed by a time with Gebr. Bellmer GmbH, Germany for 2 years. During this period, he was involved in several large paper machine and rebuild projects, first in project engineering and marketing and then in project management. He introduced some new concepts like centralized stock preparation system, total PM rebuild etc. in the Indian paper industry.
One major landmark in his long professional career was to successfully set up a green-field engineering company with German collaboration.
He is always enthusiastic about new ideas and has therefore, created the slogan “We anticipate the Future” for his company. He was the first to propose import of woodchips years back – an idea which the Indian paper industry, despite strong initial skepticism, has now accepted as a feasible alternative and is exploring commercial viability. He expects first shipments to come in next year.
Long and intimate association with several European companies has given him excellent understanding of their ways of thinking and working. Based on this insight and his knowledge of the Indian mind, he tries to build bridges between the European manufacturer and the Indian customer for a win-win situation for both sides. Today, Pepco markets products from several European and North American manufacturers.
Done Logistics is the most recent tie-up which has already resulted in a major order from Tamil Nadu Newsprint and Papers Limited, ”TNPL” for a reel handling system. The comprehensive system is automatic and includes functions for transfering, packaging and handling of reels. Thus TNPL is the newest customer in
this new territory for Done Logistics.
